Boating competition is one of the traditions of the Bengali nation and centuries old culture. Keeping the tradition of the rural folk culture of this riverine country, boating is organized in different districts of the country. Therefore, like every year, Varnil organizes this boat race by Char Gobindpur and Gujuri villagers of Manikganj Sadar Upazila.

In continuation of this, the traditional boat race was held at the meeting point of Dhaleswari River, Betila-Mitra and Krishnapur Union of Manikganj Sadar Upazila. In the Thai Thai water, the beat of Dhak-Dhol beats the village-Bengali songs and the rhythm of the floats of Majhi-Malla beats the waves of calm water. And to match the rhythm, the crowd danced on the chest of the huge bill.

Every year 50 different types of Chiba, Kella and Chandi boats from Manikganj, Tangail, Sirajganj, Pabna participate in the competition. Prizes for winners include motorcycles, refrigerators, color televisions.

History of boating

According to legend, boating started around Jagannath Dev’s bathing. During the bath of Jagannath Dev, many boats with bathers could be seen running and racing. In this, the sailors-malla-passengers get the joy of competition. From this the beginning of boating. It is also known that there were several landlords in Manikganj. They used to organize a one-day event in which boating was notable.
