Type 2 diabetes is caused by a problem with a hormone called ‘insulin’ in the body. Insulin controls the amount of glucose or sugar in your blood. This hormone is made from a gland in the back of the stomach called the pancreas. When food is digested and enters your bloodstream, this insulin breaks it down into blood cells to produce energy.

But with type 2 diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin, or even if enough insulin is made, the body’s cells are not sensitive to that insulin. That is why your body cannot produce energy by breaking down sugar.

The following is often associated with type 2 diabetes:

  • Overweight,
  • Lack of physical exertion,
  • Any family member such as father, mother, brother or sister has type 2 diabetes

Many people suffer from type 2 diabetes without knowing it. Diabetes is often diagnosed when blood or urine tests are done for a different type of illness or problem.
