During the popular uprising of 1969, the Pakistani military imposed Article 144 to suppress the movement called by university students. But on the morning of February 18, students broke the law and started protesting on the highway in front of the main gate of the university. After knowing the matter, Dr. Joha arrives there and tries to pacify the students and take them inside the university.

The students started marching at one point. As a result, the Pak Army prepared to fire on them. Then Dr. Joha kept shouting—Don’t fire, I said don’t fire. He then spoke to the Pakistani military officers present and requested them not to fire on them. But without heeding his words, Pakistani army captain Hadi fired at him and immediately he fell on the ground. Later, he was taken to the Rajshahi Municipal Office and brutally killed with a bayonet. This eminent educationist sacrificed his life to protect the protesting students. He was buried in front of the main gate in front of the administrative building of the university. A Joha memorial plaque has been erected at the spot where he was shot dead. 

Every year on February 18, Teachers’ Day is celebrated in Rajshahi University in his memory. An administrative holiday is observed on this day. Dr. entered the main gate of the university and walked some distance. Zohar’s tomb is visible. Rows of flowers on four sides, leafy trees guard his tomb. This place is known as Joha Chatwar. He was honored with flowers. In honor of this great sacrifice, the university authorities have constructed a residential hall named after him, which Dr. Known as Shamsujjoha Hall. A commemorative spark has been erected in his memory in the premises of the residence hall by the hands of the former president of the fine arts department, Kanak Kumar Pathak. His footprints are still spread throughout the university.
